We want to welcome you to the Ninth Grade Honors program at Freedom High School!

Your summer reading assignment is comprised of two activities. Good readers interact with a text in order to increase comprehension and to awaken critical insight. To that end, we require that each student purchase his or her own copy of the required text. While reading, you will want to annotate or "talk to the text” (underline, highlight, write notes), noting thematic aspects of the book.

The required readings are:

The Color of Water by James McBride

Completion of Primary Source Materials

It is not necessary to purchase a new book. You can locate used editions through many online booksellers.

Regardless of which semester you are scheduled for Honors English 9 / Honors U.S. History, all assignments are due on the first day of school on August 27, 2012.
